Candles and Traditions
Through the
centuries,candles
were offered as gifts and used to
ward off darkness. The first use of candles at Christmas was
during the Roman festival of Saturnalia. Tall tapers of wax (taper
candles
as we know them today), were used for gifts to guests and offered
to Saturn as a symbol of his light.
Pagans also used
candles during Yule festivities. Candlelight and
bonfires were used as symbols of the sun, and as a farewell
to past seasons and a welcome to the beginning of a new cycle of
seasons.
As Christianity spread, candles were placed in the front window
for the
candle - light to guide the Christ Child as he went from house
to house on Christmas Eve.
In some parts of Europe, this tradition still continues. In
Sweden,
St. Lucia is still celebrated with the youngest girl in the
family wearing (or carrying) a crown of small lit tapers.
Candles also play a significant role in other traditions /
Religions of the holiday
season, including Chanukah (Hannuka), Kwanzaa, Yule and Candlemas.
Chanukah,
also known as the
Festival of Lights, uses a special eight-branched
candelabrum lit one candle a day for each of the 8 days of
Chanukah(Hanukah).
Kwanzaa’scentral practice
is the lighting of the mishumaa (seven candles)
of Kwanzaa whichsignifies each of the Nguzo Saba (Seven
Principles).
Candlemas was originally a Pagan festival to celebrate
purification,
but Christians now celebrate it on February 2, the 40th day after
Christmas, as
a day representing and honoring Christ and Mary’s
purification in the temple.
~ Modern Day Traditions ~
During the Victorian era, candles were used on Christmas
trees and
considered a symbol of the Star of Wonder. Often, various
merchants and
tradesmen would give a bundle of pine-oil perfumed tapers, tied
together with ribbon as gifts to their loyal patrons.
Today, Christmas candles continue to be a favorite at
Christmas-time.
Pine scented, cinnamon and gingerbread spice scented candles, red
candles,
green candles and candy cane colored candles, are just a few of
the candles that have
become popular over the years. Even little tea-lights help to
spread the wonderful
smells of potpourri that we have learned to associate with
Christmas.
Boniface and
Thor's Oak
A
story about the origin of Christmas trees
Legend has it that the missionary
to the Germans, St. Boniface, in order to stop sacrifices
at their sacred Donar Oak near Geismar, chopped the tree down in
725 A.D. Supposedlywith
one mighty blow, Saint Boniface felled the massive oak and as the
tree split, a beautiful young
fir tree sprang from its center. Saint Boniface told the people
that this lovely
evergreen,
with its branches pointing to heaven, was indeed a holy tree, the
tree of the Christ Child,
a symbol of His promise of eternal life.
He instructed them henceforth to
carry the
evergreen from the wilderness into their homes and to surround it
with gifts, symbols of love
and kindness. read more

Christmas Presents vs. His Presence
Should the main focus be about "presents" instead of
"Presence" of the
Lord Jesus on Christmas?
